Duty Allowance raised to Mvr 10,000 for Goods Brought by Travelers, Personal Effects, and Commercial Samples, effective from July 01, 2024.

Duty Allowance raised to Mvr 10,000 for Goods Brought by Travelers, Personal Effects, and Commercial Samples, effective from July 01, 2024.

Starting July 1, 2024, the duty exemption cap for goods brought by travelers, personal effects, and commercial samples will be raised from MVR 6,000 to MVR 10,000 based on the Free on Board (FOB) value.

This increased exemption applies specifically to personal use goods imported by general customers and travelers. Goods with an FOB value below MVR 10,000 will qualify for duty exemption.

For personal use goods exceeding an FOB value of MVR 10,000, a goods declaration is mandatory. Duty will be calculated after deducting MVR 10,000 from the FOB value.

Likewise, a goods declaration must be filed for items with an FOB value below MVR 10,000 but still classified as commercial quantity. Duty for these items will be assessed based on the FOB value of the shipment.

Medicines prescribed by a practitioner are eligible for duty exemption, covering quantities prescribed for up to six months.

In addition, courier or postal consignments will enjoy duty exemption, with each tracking number treated as a separate shipment. Multiple consignments under a single consignee with different tracking numbers will be considered one shipment and qualify for duty exemption if each has an FOB value below MVR 10,000.

Despite the extended duty exemption for these items, certain previously eligible goods will no longer qualify, including tobacco or nicotine products and their smoking devices, single-use plastic items, energy drinks, motorcycles, autocycles, four-wheeled vehicles, maritime vessels, automotive and marine spare parts, and items imported by individuals identified by Customs for misuse or non-personal/commercial use.

The implementation of regulations for conventional and flavored cigarettes, e-cigarettes, hookah (sheesha), and e-liquids will take effect on August 1, 2024.Top of FormBottom of Form
